LAST OR SECOND ADAM

Scriptures are cited from the King James (Authorized) Version, unless stated otherwise.

Question: Who is the “last Adam” referred to in 1 Corinthians 15: 45?

Answer: The entire context (1 Corinthians 15: 45-47) reads: “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.”

Adam, referred to as “The first man Adam,” was made “a living soul” on the human, “natural” plane, “of the earth, earthy.” But he sinned and fell under the condemnation of death, and therefore transmitted imperfect, dying life to the entire human family. But Jesus, by laying down His perfect human life as the Ransom, or corresponding price for Adam, purchased Adam and all of his forfeited rights. He therefore has the right to generate a race with perfect life. Christ thus acquired the right to become the second Man (Adam means man), the second or last Adam, the last because there are only two Adams, and He is the second of these.

Jesus became the Second Adam at His resurrection, being raised “a quickening spirit,” on the Divine plane. In the next Age, Jesus will actually give perfect human life, with the right to life and its pertinent life-rights, to all who will accept Him as their Father, that is, to all who through obedience, faith, love and reverence toward Him are willing to become and remain His children. Because He will give perfect everlasting life to His children, He is called the Everlasting Father (Isaiah 9: 6). His fathering will include recovering from the tomb those of them who are there (John 5: 28, 29).

Let us add that as Eve was associated with Adam in his sin and the curse, and cooperated with him in bringing the race into a dying life; so the Church, in the Millennium, will be associated with Christ as His Bride and as the Mother of His children, and thus will cooperate with Him in regenerating the race in righteousness and life.
